Frequently asked questions — Monero (XMR) wallet

Everything you need to know about Feather Wallet and the Monero (XMR) network: creating and restoring a wallet, the browser-based Monero web wallet, privacy, fees and downloads. Can’t find an answer? The desktop wallet and release notes cover the details, and the Monero wallet guides walk through everything step by step.

What is Feather Wallet?

Feather Wallet is a free, open-source Monero (XMR) wallet available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Tails and the web. It is lightweight, beginner friendly and non-custodial: your private keys stay on your own device and nobody else can access your Monero coins.

What is Monero (XMR)?

Monero (XMR) is a decentralized, privacy-focused cryptocurrency. Unlike Bitcoin, Monero hides the sender, the receiver and the amount of every transaction using ring signatures, stealth addresses and RingCT. That makes XMR a fungible digital cash suitable for private payments.

Is Feather Wallet free?

Yes. Feather Wallet is completely free and open source. There are no accounts, no subscriptions, no KYC and no tracking. The only fee you ever pay is the small Monero network fee when you send a transaction.

Can I use Feather Wallet online in my browser?

Yes. Feather Web is the browser version of the wallet: open it in your browser, create a new Monero wallet or restore an existing one from its seed phrase, and manage your XMR without installing anything. It follows the same non-custodial approach as the desktop app.

How do I create a new Monero wallet?

Open Feather Web and choose “Create a new wallet”. A fresh 16-word Polyseed recovery phrase is generated locally in your browser. Write the phrase down on paper, confirm you saved it, and your new Monero (XMR) address is ready to receive coins.

How do I restore an existing Monero wallet?

Choose “Restore wallet from seed” and enter your recovery phrase — 16 words (Polyseed) or 25 words (legacy Monero seed). The wallet validates the phrase, derives your real address and synchronizes with the Monero network. You can check a phrase before restoring it.

What is a recovery seed phrase and why is it important?

A seed phrase is the master key of your Monero wallet: 16 words in Polyseed format or 25 words in the classic Monero format. Anyone who knows the words controls the funds, so write them on paper, keep them offline and never share them with anyone — including support staff.

Is it safe to use a web wallet for Monero?

In Feather Web the keys are generated and kept locally in your browser session and are never uploaded to a server. For larger amounts, the recommended practice is to keep the seed phrase offline and use the desktop or offline-signing workflow. Never store your seed digitally.

Which platforms are supported?

Feather Wallet runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Tails as a lightweight desktop application, and in any modern browser through Feather Web. Downloads and source code are available on the download page.

How do I receive Monero (XMR)?

Open your wallet and click “Receive”. You will see your Monero address and a QR code. Share it with the sender, or scan the QR code with another wallet — the funds appear after the transaction is confirmed on the network.

How do I send Monero to someone?

Click “Send”, paste the recipient’s Monero address, enter the amount and review the network fee. After you confirm, the transaction is signed locally and broadcast to the Monero network. Your wallet must be synchronized before sending.

What are the fees for Monero transactions?

The Monero network fee is small and dynamic — it depends on transaction size and current network load. Feather shows the exact fee before you confirm a payment. Using the wallet itself is free.

Does Feather Wallet support Tor and I2P?

Yes. The desktop wallet supports routing traffic through Tor or I2P to protect your network privacy, and Feather Web works in the Tor Browser. For maximum privacy, combine a private node connection with offline seed storage.

How is Monero different from Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is a transparent ledger — every amount and address is public. Monero is private by default: ring signatures obscure the sender, stealth addresses hide the receiver, and RingCT hides the amount. That makes XMR fungible and much harder to trace.

Can I keep several Monero wallets in Feather Web?

Yes. You can add multiple wallets on the same device — create new ones or restore existing seed phrases — and switch between them from the Wallet menu. Each wallet keeps its own address and balance.

Where can I download Feather Wallet?

Go to the download page to get signed binaries for Windows, macOS, Linux and Tails, or build from source. Always verify the release signatures before running a wallet binary.
